I have a 98 svt and every once in a while before I would put the key in turn it and it would take a little while to start up. just recently it turned into a matter for sitting there for at least a minute trying to get it to just turn over. I'm assuming this is some sort of problem with my PATS system as it seems to be the starter being disabled. is there something I can do to beef up the system or has anyone had this happen before?
a quick reply would be helpful, and I know about search, but I haven't found anything actually useful as of yet.

Does not sound like your PATS key... even if you had a problem with the chip in the key the car should still start up and if the car thinks it is being stolen due to a bad PATS key you car will shut down after a few minutes.
Does the car Crank? and for how long if it does?

doesn't crank at all, I'll sit there with the key turned and after a while it'll crank and start right up. other times I'll take it out put it in and it'll start up. could it be my batter/alternator/starter?

If there is a PATS problem, the PATS light will blink like crazy if you try to start it.

Hummm Strange... If your Clutch right to the floor? Does the dash show power when you turn the key to the on postion?
I am at the shop right now... I will ask one of the techs if they have come across this.. I work at Ford so I am sure if it is common they will have seen it.

I know my friend that owned it before me did a mod that disables the clutch needing to be to the floor. but I try both ways regardless. and yes all the power accessories come on, the only thing is the engine doesn't even try to turn over for a while.

Ok here is what you do... Turn the key to the on postion but not to crank it.. if the theft light does not flash you do not have a problem with PATS.. if the theft light does flash with the key in the on postion there is a Theft issue. Now if it is not a theft issue and I do not think it is you are probably looking at an ignition switch. The parts number is SW 5213 and list for $133.42 at your local Ford dealer Hope this helps

Yeah I would take a ride over there and you can ask them to talk with one of there Techs and see what they say... When at Parts ask them if they can help you out on the price.. Most of the time I give people off the street a deal on parts...
Not sure how they are where you are but it does not hurt to ask.
Best of luck!

Dude... look... do this.. you will THANK ME.
the VERY NEXT TIME this is happening, I bet this is your situation:
(a possibility of) NOTHING ON THE DASH coming on.. (not even warning lights)
The PATS light stays illuminated completely.
No clicking, no cranking.. nothing.
AS SOON AS THIS HAPPENS.. get a jump start from another car at home, etc.. and I BET you it starts right up. (even if you think your battery is "perfectly good" or you "just replaced it/tested it/whatever"... jump it, it'll start, and you can thank me... lol
