I was in exacly your situation earlier this year and i am just in the final stages of my 3L swap. I thought it had a spun bearing but it turned out to be a seriouly mangled pistion. I drove it up a ramp and then out of my driveway where it locked. If you want to take the bumper off (need to do it anways) there are some tow hooks you could easily tow it to your friends house. Im not a mechanic or anything so It has taken me a while to get everything finished. As far as stuff to replace I did all the tranny upgrades (shift forks, torsen, new syncros etc etc) clutch and a few little misc things that im sure will be fine on your car. It sounds like you have a pretty tight budget and some of the things that i did on mine wouldn't really jive with that. I went with a 03 taurus engine and used the block and heads. Then kept the SVT cams, UIM and LIM. There is lots of info on the different variations of the 3L swap your going to need to read up on and decide which will work best for you.
