I felt it was a good idea to replace the oil pump, the timing assemblies and upgrade the oil pan/baffel/pick-up.
Are you bolting the 2.5L heads on as-is?

Atleast change the valve seals since that's the case. An alternator might be a good idea if you have higher miles on it, since it can be a PITA to change in the car.
A new clutch kit and slave cylinder is a good idea too and either have your OEM flywheel lightened or replace it with a SPEC or Fidanza version. Upgraded shiftforks and focus shift tower.....
I'm sure I'm missing something else.....

Aight, I'll really consider the alternator.
My clutch is less than a year old. SPEC Stage 1. My flywheel was resurfaced at the same time it was installed.
Are the upgraded shiftforks and shift tower an easy install during the swap?

The shift tower can be replaced with the motor and trans in the car, Its super easy. In order to put the new forks in you do have to split the tranny case but you dont need to pull input/output shafts theres enough room in there. Just be careful. not to damage anything. And run a bead of rtv sealant when you put the cases back together so it doesnt leak later.

Trust me, I would get one but right now my wallet doesn't allow it.
The 3L is being done more as a repair than for performance. My next major overhaul will be the works and done for performance reasons.

I was in exacly your situation earlier this year and i am just in the final stages of my 3L swap. I thought it had a spun bearing but it turned out to be a seriouly mangled pistion. I drove it up a ramp and then out of my driveway where it locked. If you want to take the bumper off (need to do it anways) there are some tow hooks you could easily tow it to your friends house. Im not a mechanic or anything so It has taken me a while to get everything finished. As far as stuff to replace I did all the tranny upgrades (shift forks, torsen, new syncros etc etc) clutch and a few little misc things that im sure will be fine on your car. It sounds like you have a pretty tight budget and some of the things that i did on mine wouldn't really jive with that. I went with a 03 taurus engine and used the block and heads. Then kept the SVT cams, UIM and LIM. There is lots of info on the different variations of the 3L swap your going to need to read up on and decide which will work best for you.
