if you are here illegaly, it is a serious barrier to getting a valid residency and/or citizen ship. you are supposed to go back to mexico and wait in line with the thousands of other people who want to come in. this takes yeears. for people who are desperate, that is not an option. obviously this ceger's friend was desperate. yeah, he could have chosen to stay in mexico and even made good $ in the drug trade, and believe me, in many parts of mexico, that is the only work available. chose to come here to make an honest living instead. I think bush is lax on this issue because there is much more lobby pressure from business to ignore it then there are people who are pissed off about it.

i think the drivers license is a double-edged sword. while i think it is inappropriately "condoning" illegal immigration at the same time, as mentioned above, it is way to keep track of them. it would also help with census data and budgets because these people are waay under-represented in the population numbers. they dont come forward and say "here i am" so we have to take educated guesses as to how many there really are.

dont forget, the driver's license isnt the only one doing this. last year many banks announced that they would start allowing them to open bank accounts with just their mexican matricular(?) cards. (i think thats what they were called)
all the banks are thinking about is $$$$$$

i believe the only "real" solution is to help improve their economies back home so they want to stay there. most of them would prefer to live in mexico if it werent for the dire economic conditions. i just read an interesting article on vietnam yesterday. remember how thousands of people, both legally and illegally, were dying to get over here? their economy has made such tremendous gains that some of the vietnamese who live here, have moved back over there.
