After a while of researching and reading everyones opinions in the archives, i have decided to make the big step towards using the internet to its full potential. I ordered vonage today and will be waiting for it come in about 5 business days. Chime in if you have it and if you like it or hate it. Maybe we convince people to join up.
Over 200,000 miles and dead......kinda. Time to get a new ride.

The only thing holding me back is the lack of true 911 or e911 support. With 2 small kids in the house I don't want to rely on them being able to tell a PSP dispatcher exactly where we live and what the problem is. Any VOIP provider have e911 available in upstate NY?

I'm still trying to dive in. I've been told three different services are great (Packet8, Lingo, Vonage). I'm leaning towards Packet8, because the Hightowers love it, but I can't tell from their website if they have the 911 service in my area. It all really depends on who can offer that in my area.

Hah! Farmington is upstate NY? Holy hell. Do a map search for Plattsburgh, or Rouses Point (where I work). You'll see what upstate NY is.

I've been contemplating it lately. I really don't have any use for a house phone as i use my cell for everything...but, the coolest feature of the vonage that I never noticed before, is wherever you plug in the modem, the phone will ring. So you can take your landline anywhere there is a broadband connection.

I switched over about a month ago. I love it. My phone bill with Verizon (for local ONLY) was right around 50 a month. With Vonage, I got the 500 minute deal for 15.00 and my bill was just under 17.00. I don't use the phone that much.
As for 911, that isn't a big issue. You set 911 up for the physical area where it is going to be used. Unless you take your phone number with you on travel you won't have any issue.

I meant "upstate" as distinct from "downstate" i.e. south of Albany, or in other words not NYC. I should have said "Western New York" but then the Buffalo area people would complain that only they can use that term...

Now I don't know from personal experience so take it for what its worth, but I had a customer who ordered it about 2 months ago and had nothing but problems with it, and when he wanted to go back to just having a normal phone service, it was a PIA to get his number released back to the phone company. I have no idea if thats a common occurance though, just my only expierence with it.

I have unlimited long distance plan with IDT for $39.99 a month, However, after taxes, surcharges, and other bogus fees, it becomes almost $60! I am wondering what kind of phone bills you guys get after all fees are calculated.

IIRC, even if you shut down your service w/ your local company, you should still be able to dial 911 on your phone. Vonage doesn't plug into your phone jack, so you should be ok.
