The difference is this: Hyper and Solaris and
Nokya and Eurolites take a cheaply made 9006
bulb, tint it blue, and sell it to you at 2x
the cost for less light output. The HID gear
BMW and Audi and Mercedes and Porsche use is
based around xenon capsules with NO filament,
the light source is an electric arc like you
see in stadiums. Unlike stadium lights, HIDs
light up instantly because the ballast gear
puts about 20000 volts when the lights first
come up. Otherwise they'd take ten minutes to
get bright.
The other difference -- the blue light from
a set of Eurolights or whatever is the light
you are using to see (or not see, as the case
may be) the road. The blue light you see from
a BMW is noise/interference light that you'll
see as a bystander. The light that is being
used to illuminate the road is pure white, it
is not blue. The blue is a side-effect of the
electric arc and it's not the point. Also of
note is that the beam pattern on these lights
is wide and even, and the cut-off very crisp.
Now...
HID retro-fit has to be done on a per-car,
per-reflector basis however. I have seen
places that are offering "one size fits all"
HID retro-fit solutions that essentially put
a 9006 housing around a xenon capsule. This
results in *horrible* lighting performance
as the capsule is not placed in the proper
location (inside your reflector) to produce
an optimum (or even serviceable) beam pattern
on the road in front of you.
My advice: stay clear of both el-cheapo HID
wannabe bulbs *and* expensive yet inadequate
"one size fits" HID retro-fit shops. If you
are serious about going to HID, places will
do the work, but it will be expensive.
If you want new bulbs... don't bother paying
PIAA $100 for a set of halogen bulbs. I mean,
this is such a blatant scam! Look into Wagner
Brite-Lites or OSRAM 9006HP instead.
I personally just laugh when I see cheapo
HID "look" bulbs. Like I'm supposed to think
somebody opted for the $800 HID option on a
Sunfire or Cavalier or Civic?

Or that they got the $800 HID option but not
the non-plastic-wheelcover option?
