You'll be a smear on the road if you buy a 1000 for your first bike. That is totally stupid.
I agree the 600's are all too small and slow (for me and other experienced riders) but that doens't mean that if you're a big guy you should get a liter bike. That's insane. If you're a big guy like over 5'10" then buy a cruiser-style bike like a Virago or something like that before geting a liter sport bike.
I saw a guy walk in and buy a Hayabusa as his first bike. No more than two blocks down the road, he low-sided it.
