For that kind of shooting situation, I'd go for a fullsize Colt 1911-type frame. I know they're mostly in .45ACP, but if you shop around I know you can find some in 9mm chamberings. You'll pay more than you would with the Ruger, but there's a reason that the design has been around for almost a century...it's the most successful pistol design EVER.
