I get 22mpg city and 28-29mpg highway.

That's with a hot 3L engine and a lead foot.

The 2.5L got 23-24mpg city & 30mpg highway. It was highly modified as well.

Many mods will actually increase gas mileage.

Anyone who is getting poor gas mileage has problems with their car. They need to do some maintenance!

It's not that the Zetec is a bad engine because it is not. However it is severly undersized for this platform. For that disadvantage it does not generate much better fuel economy numbers either.

Undersized yes, but not too bad. Just drive it right and gas mileage is a good bit better than a duratec. Great thing with a zetec is on the highway, its best gas mileage is at 80-90.

Ouch, that hurts. Nice SN.
Anyways, I get around 18-21mpg around town in a pretty hilly driving environment. If I lived in a place with flat roads I think could expect much better.

OT: DemonSVT, are the roads flat in Kansas City? Just wondering because your fuel mileage is great. I guess you keep up your car very well.

I just got back from a 1000 mile trip to SC in my '98 zetec, and i got 40.5 mpg.

That's cruising at 60-70+, although I don't have cruise so it varied some. And it pulled up every hill (some were pretty steep) in 5th without losing speed, and that's with 4 people in the car.

I drive my car pretty easy in general, but I've never got less than 32 mpg in any of my driving.

The zetec isn't a powerhouse, but it seems to hold it's own well enough as far as I'm concerned, but it just depends on what you want your car to do.

I got 38 MPG on a road trip once. Cruising about 65-70 all the way. Never cared to check city MPG though.

I get about what DemonSVT does... around 22 or so in the city and 27/28ish on the highway (doing constant 85mph @ 3500rpm). Best I've seen was on the highway, doing 85 again off Conoco gas, I got 32mpg.

My old Zetec/ATX... Got about 20 in the city and 24/25 on the highway (doing 80mph @ unknown rpm, no tach). Best I ever saw was 26.

The Zetec doesn't have the power to move the car along w/o a lot of throttle. Duratec has more than enough power to move the car at speed.

I find that cruise absolutely destroys my fuel economy.. Accelerating to keep up speed up all the hills, engine compression to slow down. If you're looking for fuel economy on long trips, you might want to avoid it.

I have a '98 Mystique (for one more week) with a 4 cyl and automatic. It has 96 000km on a new engine and tranny, new plugs, wires, thermostat, recent tune up and I just got 415km to a tank of gas. Best I've ever done, and I drive it hard, just to keep up with traffic. I regularly see 350-375 to a tank, but I always fill up with about 1/4 tank left,or just under.

I always thought for a 4 cylinder,I got piss poor ecomony, but let it slide because it's an automatic and I drive the crap out of it just to keep pace with traffic. I absolutely hate the 4 cylinder in these cars. It's too underpowered for the vehicle it's in.

So that's why I bought a '95 Contour with a V6 and 5 speed. I won't complain about mileage now because it's a V6,and to me,it would be more acceptable to see 375km to a tank with heavy driving rather than in the 4 cylinder.
