Hello everyone, hope all is well. I just have a quick question about my heat gauge in my 96' 2.0l contour. The needle doesn't move up at all. Yet it doesn't over heat. Has anyone had the same problem? Just wondering about replacing it? Where also do I find the sensor that runs the gauge. If anyone has a shop manual drawing that would be helpful. Thanks again

Sounds like your temp gauge sensor is dead.
I would buy a new one and try it. Remeber our cars have and ECT known to many part stores as a temp sensor.
If you pick one up make sure to ask for the temp gauge sensor.

A search would be best........

Did you read the link? I guess not beacuse in it is this.....

The temp sender on a 4cyl is located on the underside of the thermostat housing which is bolted to the head...
should be easy to identify.

My guess would be the Temp Sender. Mine would work sometimes and then often never moved above the white box. What did it for me was the Temp Sender. On the 2.0 Zetec this part can be tricky to replace. It should not cost more than 12$ from Advance Auto. You will need to remove one of the hoses, this is easy. The part in question should be a 45 angle pointing down. Be sure to have the new part ready because when this sendor is removed lots and lots of fluid will start pooring out, so be ready. Getting to the part seems to be the only problem, even with the water hose out of the way. A small ratchet and deep socket should work fine with a little screaming and bad words remove and replace. Now the thing to remember is that the housing is made of plastic. So don't over tighten the new sendor.

This is a 1 or 2 hour job for less than 15$.

If that does not fix the problem then think about getting a new guage and checking the wires.

I changed mine, it wasnt bad at all. Best if the engine is cool.... Oh, and be careful, I broke the clip that holds the wire harness on to the sensor and it will sometimes vibrate out I was going to put a small drop of glue to hold it in there, but was afraid to in case I needed to replace it again. Just a heads up.... Plastic gets brittle over time. I learned the hard way....
