If you have a laptop, save up and get the obd-2.com cable and software. It's amazing how much stuff that you can see with it.
I bought the tricom unit from them and I can view all of the OBD-2 info made on ANY vehicle made after 1995. It works on my Contour, my Dad's Nissan Sentra, and my Mom's Toyota Camry.
Unlike ALDL, you can't just make a cable that plugs into the computer. You must have an interface that talks to the computer in its language. I think Ford is PWM, a variant of i2c. (If none of this made sense, don't worry, I'm a geek.)
