When you rev the engine in neutral you will hit the factory rev limiter at 4000 rpm if it is an automatic trans car. This is normal. It is intended to keep drivers from destroying the trans by reving the engine and jaming it into gear.
I'm tempted to make a comment about "sunk costs". I'll leave you to ponder on that for a while.
Your post was helpful. I do understand the high cost of what I have done, but I am commited to keeping this car for several more years.
