$500 for a chip ?

I thought that you could get a Diablosport or Superchip for around $225 ?

Even the so called "custom" tunes on a SCT are not custom.
They are off the shelf programs generally tailored to your mods.
Cars are different from the factory (hence ECU codes),
and therefore when modded they do not get the exact same gains and do not end up with the ECU adapting in the same way.
(Thats not a real clear statement, but it gets the point across.)
A true custom tune is done on the dyno.
Even ones done from a dyno sheet (like I did) aren't as good.

Bang for the buck, SCT with 3 programs is the most flexible option.
But unless you need multiple programs a single program chip is more than adequate.

My plan is to get to ADC when finished and have them custom program my Superchips flip-chip (2 program), one for street and one for nitrous.

Well, the SCT(Superchip Custom Tuning) chip is supposed to be custom, meaning that a dealer/tuner makes the program/tune then sells them.

Not like the old Superchip or Diablosport chips that had tunes created by the manufacturer then vendors basically just sold them, not tune them unless you bought a custom tune.

If you're going to get an SCT chip, I would recommend getting one that has been programmed/tuned by someone who has access to a dyno and has done extensive testing and data logging.

Also, the SCT flashers are cool but they seem to take a long time to download/upload the tunes.

I know in some cars, you have no choice like the Focus SVT and the new Foci with the Duratec engines. They have no serive port on the PCM/EEC V/ECU.

On the Focus SVT, it takes like 10-15 minutes for download/upload of the files. You have to backup your stock file first then download the new tune/file.

Then, if you have multiple tunes, you can switch them on the fly with a flasher like an SCT chip, that can hold 4 programs/tunes plus the stock tune.

If at all possible, I'd recommend just getting a chip from a shop that can tweak your program right then and there...on the dyno (such as ADC).

Each car is different. What works for me may not work for you because my timing may be one or two degrees different on each cam due to factory tolerances. I retard my timing for gains - you may advance yours.

Trust me, there is no better way to do it than have your car strapped to the dyno and the chip burner right next to it. A/F a little high or low from 2k to 2500 RPMs? Modify the fuel table, reburn the chip and do another pull to see if it helped.

This is the only correct way to do it.

That is still off the shelf,
just tweeked to your ECU code and mods.

I know Focus guys like to call that a custom tune,
but its not.

A true custom tune is one done specificly for your car from while on a dyno.

I barely consider my custom program (sent in to Superchips and tuned from dyno results) to be a "custom" tune.

True. Each ECU code is different and if you're going to buy a chip, I'd ask if they've dyno'd and tuned your ECU code.

I got my chip for my Focus from a vendor who tested just about all ECU codes/cars/engines and they do vary from code to code and work with SCT very closely.

Besides A/F and timing, the tuner can also adjust loading parameters that can give you some extra power during light loading too, which is overlooked by some dyno operators. It's not 1 single parameter that does this so you have to know what you're doing.

There's alot more to tuning than there use to be on the chips/flashers and unless they/tuner has been trained/mentored by SCT themselves, they could be missing out on some power gains.

Also, there'a list of other things the tuner can do to that the dyno operator may not even know about or even ask you if you want it done.

Like these:
--------------

Aggressive shifting at wide-open throttle (Auto Trans Only)
Alternator disabled at wide-open throttle
Custom idle
Custom rev. limit
Custom dash shift light setting at wide-open throttle
Turn off dash shift light
Early fan activation
EGR system disabled
Increased fuel pressure
No ignition timing for low octane gas (with 2 or more programs)
Rear oxygen sensor disabled for race header
Valet mode - 30mph Max (with 2 or more programs) - This one you can even set to 60mph or whatever to govern the speed of your car if you let someone borrow it.

Anti-Theft mode
OEM stock file

Well, people have taken their SCT chips bought from vendors and had them dyno'd to check the gains ans it's about +5whp/wtq.

And people who've had them dyno tuned haven't yeilded anymore power.

It's all in the tuner you buy the chip from.

I agree that dyno tuned is best but why pay $150hr and $300 for a chip to get basically the same gains...
