I'm not really sure what it is exactly. When I plug the harrd drive into the computer directly it's fine, but when I plug the home unit into the network directly Simplecenter doestn't see it. The wireless problem I think is more attributed to the way I have my network set up. My dell laptop doesn't like to connect all the time so I have it set up as a shared key. It didn't like WEP as much so I've been hesitant to change everything around. It doesn't really bother me to bring the drive in with me every so often to change out music.
As for Twonky, I had read about it on other forums discussing this unit and others like it (mainly home stereo units) and decided to try it out. You can read about it here. I have actually gotten it to work with my home unit where as I still haven't with simplecenter. I still use simplecenter though with the car unit since it works just fine and I don't know if Twonky will work with the harddrive.
