Good point.

IF, and it's still inconclusive, your headgasket has failed in the same manner as mine, you will not find any coolant in the oil as the coolant that leaks into the cylinder will burn off as a water smoke on startup.
If the coolant is chemically analysed for the evidence of combustion gasses, it would be conclusive.
My engine had 40k on it but has been used in a different manner to yours.
As has been suggested, watch the coolant temp gauge closely from stone cold. If the gauge needle is climbing up the scale faster than you think is usual and the thermostat is good then...
