I have a E0 98 svt contour with 100,400 miles. When i got it (had 91,000), i loosened the top screw and the bottom screw, that you need the deep socket for on the throttle body bracket that the cruise control and throttle cable are on. i did this so it would maybe get rid of the slack in both cables. it was a pretty dumb idea, i know, but thats what working at jiffy lube and valvoline will do to you. when i tightened them both back up, a strange grinding sound occurs after i let the clutch out at about 2500-3000 rpms and also occurs when i lightly press the accelerator to hold a constant speed ( example= holding 40 in 4th gear)and doesnt go away unless i let off gas or accelerate more. if i do accelerate more, the pitch of the grinding gets higher then goes away. it does it everytime. Then i got an AEM short ram intake (from sp motorsports) and that made it worse(or maybe just louder?). It sounds like either the throttle cable or the CC cable is grinding against something. any ideas? is there a specific position/angle the throttle bracket has to be at? i cleaned the TB thoroughly and didnt do anything. It only does it if im on the road, it wont do it if im in neutral or with cluth pedal in and i rev the engine, so its difficult to pinpoint where its coming from. Its very loud and annoying. i also tried using lithium grease and silicone spray but didnt work. any ideas would be appreciated. also, a little less then half the time i come to complete stop, my car just dies. it doesnt stall or jerk or make any weird sounds, the engine just idles rough at about 200 RPM for a second or two then dies. if i hit the accelerator pedal it stops and its fine. but i have a feeling it might be related to the grinding. it does it when i downshift to a stop and also when i put it in neutral instead of downshifting into second gear coming to a stop. so i dont think its the clutch, even tho its about done for. i would appreciate any help i can get. its driving me crazy. thanks

the grinding noise is most likely a heat sheild or something.. my car makes the grinding noise if i dont rev it up to 1500 before easing out the clutch

I would pull the T-belt cover and look at your pullys to be on the safe side. Even surpentine pullys. It could be purely quincidental that you were under the hood and ths noise started. Our 98 zetec had an ocasional noise I could'nt chase down till too late. It would explain ruogh idol, stalling and some grinding. The bearing will eventualy freeze but the belt will still turn the plastic part untill melting enough to jump a tooth. Let us know what you find???

Thanks but i tried those suggestions and nothing worked. i know its not the heat shield and doesnt sound like a pulley or anything like that. its definetly something to do with the throttle and its not internal. i'll keep looking but thanks anyways.

I wonder if you did'nt fray the cable inside the shieth but I dont think it would make that much noise. Disconect it from TB and see if it moves freely??

yeah it still moves freely. I forgot to mention earlier that i hear it when i'm upshifting at WOT. its only for a split second tho. i decided to mess around with the bracket and loosened all three screws and lined up the cable perfectly straight. It still does it but not as much. does it have anything to do with the throttle position sensor? i unplugged it and plugged it back in, attempting to see if it resets itself or whatnot but didnt work. The sad thing is that i bet the problem/solution are very simple and obvious. Maybe if i take a pic of the TB bracket and the cables it might help you guys out. Im beginning to think my cruise control cable might have something to do with it cuz its pretty loose. I've been a mechanic for a little over 2 years so this is just pissing me off. i mean, the stupid sound is louder than my engine. I just dont know that much about the 2.5.

I don't think the TPS would have any thing to do with it unless the spring on the TB shaft has some kind of bind or some thing. I would take the slack out of the cruise cable but not tight so it won't hold throtle open. You will find cruise alot more responsive. Don't know what else to tell you to look for.

how would i adjust the cruise cable? its pretty loose, it sticks out almost a half inch. i didnt think it was that much of a problem. i never really use cruise control tho. Do you think it might be the IMRC cable? I'm also thinking it might have something to do with the transmission, since it only does it when its in gear. My synchros are pretty worn. It grinds every time i let the clutch out in first gear and in lower RPMs in higher gears (i.e. 15 in 2nd, 25 in 3rd) around 15 in 2nd gear, like in a parking lot, and cant downshift into first cuz it'll mess up the synchros more.
