is it true that with increased xmax you have increaed mechnical noise and so that is what is sometimes heard as distortion?

not with increased xmax per se... as you can have lots of distortion free xmax these days. but when that extra travel means the VC leaves the gap....

I hate it when I'm sitting there pounding away then my "voice coil" leaves the "gap" then I end up bending it... "Voice coils" weren't designed to bend like that...

Had to do it again, since my sub wasn't performing the way I wanted it to. I wish I would've made a ported box  Tempest Im playing 8 second tones from 33hz to 45hz. The last 8 second tone made some cracking noise, would that be the subs bottoming out?
