i posted my car in the classifieds and got the cashiers check scam that is posted as a warning above the classifieds ad webpage. they said they would send me a check for $8000 and i should send the difference.
my question is if anyone knows somewhere locally i can report this or is it a lost cause and i should just ignore the guy.

that's what they do! they send you a bad check for more than what you are asking and then they ask you to send back the difference.

what if you try cashing the bad check at one of them places that lets you cash a check without id and takes a percentage? i always wondered what would happen in that situation

I know a guy who fell for the same scam.
I would report it to the FBI.
In many cases the source of the scam is outside the country. Still the bad check could be processed as a federal offense.
Mean while, if you know its a bad check, you don't want to go down as an accessory.
