why would you just take the time off without an acknowlegement from your boss about your time off email?
anywhere I've ever worked, I had to request time off.
If I didn't receive a response to my request, I sure as hell would ask again until I got either a yes or no answer and then go from there.
I would not just assume that the answer was yes and then take the day off. That's just absurd.
I think your employer was justified.
