Did your employer not give you any warning before they fired you? I've been counseled at work about problems and they put that in my record. I think most employers would counsel an employee and give the employee a second chance before firing them.

You need to go talk to your boss, face to face. Don't get angry with him/her, talk and find out exactly why they are letting you go. Make sure you have all your backup documentation (e-mails, etc) to show them too.
There's nothing you can do to second guess until all the cards on the table. You have to show your hand, and demand to be shown theirs, then you can talk, or figure out a way to move forwards. Don't try and second guess this until you know 100% for sure.

If it's work for a University, I'm quite sure they would realize that you have academic responsibilities that need to be met first.....

Sorry, I'm with Sigma. You should have obtained a response prior to deserting. 3 days no show at work is considered abandonment in most states. They were well within' their rights to fire you. Also, I'm sure they have a plethora of people willing to fill the now vacant position.

I gotta stand by ancientsanskrit on this one man. My part time job on campus here has sign ups for final exams. That way you only sign up for what you can do. It is weird every one else is in final exams, we have 3 1/2 weeks of classes left here.

why would you just take the time off without an acknowlegement from your boss about your time off email?
anywhere I've ever worked, I had to request time off.
If I didn't receive a response to my request, I sure as hell would ask again until I got either a yes or no answer and then go from there.
I would not just assume that the answer was yes and then take the day off. That's just absurd.
I think your employer was justified.

The only time I have ever been fired was for disorderly conduct...but it was at Wal-Mart...so I didnt really give a crap. I never could bring myself to quit that horrible company even after 3 years....firing me helped me. On a strange note...everyone who asked why "I suddenly dissappeared" was told that I quit....hmmmmm....anyways...for me being fired was the best thing thats happened to me, I got an awesome job as a PT billing accountant that paid double what I was getting pushing carts around (it helped that I was in College for a business degree)
Its a new world man, slate is wiped clean. Get a better job and show those [censored] ers whats up.
