Well I do....(This post is going to be very incoherent and retarded...you've been warned)

I got a lovely email from my boss saying "sorry, but we've terminated you." So right after no sleep for the past few days due to studying for my most difficult exam, I'm ohhh that's nice.

Well apparently I was fired b/c I skipped work three times due to FINAL EXAMS. Before, you go off and state that you abused your responsibility, please keep in mind, this is a part-time job at a University. My other jobs didn't have any problems, they hire many student workers and expect this kinda stuff. Anyways, I was really pissed, since after two years of working there they canned me for something as pathetic as final exams. I really don't get it...there should be rules behind this. I know full-time workers get performance reports, however what are the rules for part-time employees? This came out of no-where right after I just finished a grueling exam today. I'm pissed, tired, irritated, got 2 more exams left, and now I gotta find a crap summer job. NEEED ALCOHOL!

BAHHHHh hum bug!
(No tour mods this summer)

WTF are they going to give you a Performance Report about?

I don't care if you were the best damn employee they ever had, you skipped out of work 3 times.

At least make an effort to make up some sort of excuse. Don't just skip-out assuming that "because it's Final Exam" week you don't have to go. It's final exam for everyone else too, and I'm sure that at least some of them managed to get to work. If you weren't expected to be at work you wouldn't have been on the schedule.

Did you tell your boss that you couldn't work certain days because of finals? Did you even call in or did you just skip work? If you didn't arrange for the time off and are now pissed because you got fired for skipping work, then welcome to the real world. You just got a lesson more valuable than anything you'll learn in class.

Emailed that I wouldn't be able to come in due to exams. I understand 99% perspiration in life, and you have to commit. However, after two years of working with them, I would have expected to have had an indication that my job was in jeopardy because of final exams (which I find utterly ridiculous).

Secondly, my boss knows quite well that my aspirations are geared towards med school, hence this semester is extremely important for me, academically. I have feelings that there is dirty plan involved, and that they are taking advantage of this situation. They know I'm graduating soon, and are willing to dispose me off for a younger student who they can get a few years out of. Regardless, of all this, I'm stil pissed.

Dude, you skipped out on work. How could you be pissed at them.

And why do they have to tell you that your job is in jeopardy? You skipped out on work. I would think that common sense would tell you that that's a job-jeopardizing thing to do. If you worked for me, e-mail or not, you'd come in to find your last paycheck on the time clock, inbox, or whereever. That'd be the only notice you got that your job was in jeopardy.

It doesn't matter if you had worked for an employer for 20 years. You skip out on work (and emailing doesn't cut it) you're gonna get fired. That's just the way it works.

Life Lesson #1 -- You are not unique, and are easily replaced.

EDIT -- And, yes, I have worked on campus. Worked for the university all 4 years I was there in a variety of jobs.

wow, that sucks! i've never been with an employer (especially in a college town) that didn't make accomodations for finals. it sounds like there may have been other motives at play here.

can't you find something else?

If you really want the job, make an appointment to see your boss, explain what happened and ask for the job back. A little contrition and sincerity can go a long way.

Did they know you had these exams? Did you tell them you needed time off for them? Did they hire you knowing your students position?

If the answer is yes ... forget, cool off and chalk it up to experience.

If you never told them, then I'm afraid to say, it's your funeral, mate! Again, chalk it up to experience and make sure you keep everyone informed next time.

Only hearing your side of the story, makes me think that it's an excuse to get rid of you, as skipping three times to be fired is pretty draconian. Again chalk it up to experience.

Don't take it too hard, find another job. Sounds like heartless words, eh, but it's what you have to do.

Oh yes ... talk to you boss about it too, if it's just an e-mail out of the blue, it could always be a practical joker!
I actually worked at one place where the VP's second in command kept sending "love" e-mails from her account to another employee. He eventually turned up for a romantic evening with her ... she didn't know ... more to it than that, and quite funny in the end, but you get the drift.

Sucks dude! Definitely got talkto your boss and atleast hear whats he has to say and hopefully get a chance to explainyourself so that everything is out in the clear. That way you will have a better way of knowing if there is foul play.

Good luck and be happy your almost outta there!

Yes, they did. It's a protein synthesis laboratory at the University of Michigan, hence it's revolved around students. This is the second year that I've worked there, so they are quite aware.

Yes, emailed about a half a week in advance. It is difficult to schedule around when final exam dates are changed. Edit: worst part of it all, is I never received a response (I am going to bring proof from my sent messages in my email that I did send it ahead of time).

I'm still blowing off hot air, but in the end I am the one who hurts. I am out of a great paying job with scientific work and now have to resort to finding a new job, and summer is rolling around the corner (period I make most of my income).

Sigma, I think there is a fine line between hiring a full-time employee and a part-time student employee. If I didn't have classes to attend, other jobs to work at, volunteering, etc...it really isn't that difficult to maintain one full-time job. If an employeer is too narrow-minded to realize that there are different situations when you hire a student, then why hire them to begin with? I just find it hard to believe...

Anyways, it's over. If anyone here has been fired, how did you go about it i.e. did you try quiting so that your records weren't blemished. I sure as hell am going to opt to quit rather than being fired. Any suggestions. Thanks for allowing me to vent myself and hearing me out, guys.
