I think there are also plenty of christians who don't have a chip on their shoulder like Davo. All of my friends and extended family are christians and none of them have ever mentioned that they think christians are being persecuted. And yes religion does come up pretty often in our conversations.
Some people like to think they are fighting against the odds. It makes them feel important.
