A moderate to conservative, he is related to several European royal families, giving him a degree of class and connections that I believe is desirable in a modern Pope.
i think that this move was more strategical than anything. and i think his age has a lot to do with it. he will likely have less than 10 years in him as pope, after which it will be a little easier to bring in someone more "radical".
