James, I heard Scientology is hiring!!

...in all seriousness, I didn't know any of the candidates, but I would have liked to see the Church reach out to their huge Latin American populations and elect a Latin American pope. The vote for Ratzinger, if anything, serves as a nod to the legacy of John Paul II.

I saw Ratzinger on TV earlier today and the man looks like he'll be on his way out almost as quickly as he got in.

I was raised following the Catholic religion, but did myself the unfortunate deed of not paying very much attention to the way things are done. I'm wondering why all the Popes are so old. Do they have to be a certain age or do they just have to serve X amount of years as a Cardinal before they can be elected as a Pope?

No limits.
Respect for tradition, Popes are very political figures and from religious insiders they wanted a very conservative Pope woho would follow in the previous footsteps of JPII, while remaining out of the public eye as JPII was a very controversial Pope. Christians felt it was time for a Pope to blend into the shadows for a while while carrying on his duties. Maybe the next one will be a younger more controversial figure.

Frankly, I'd like to see a really strong pope come out & take on secularism. Leadership without guidance is leading to the decay of modern society IMHO. Political correctness in all its forms is leading to the exclusion of theological guidance & the abolition of free speech if it has to do with religion.

Long live John Paul II.

As a catholic I am apalled at the thought of that.

Religion has no place in the governance of a state, unless you want blind idealogy spilling the blood of millions.

You are appalled that our leaders might fall back upon their faith and moral center when making decisions? I really have no problem with that. There is a BIG difference between "blind idealogy" (I assume that you mean living in a theocracy) and in choosing leaders with character and conviction. If the foundation of a man's character is an outspoken faith in God, so be it.

FWIW, many so called Christians do not even attempt to live in the example of Christ, so I can see where a lot of people develop such ideas while observing some of the idiots in our governenment.

When I think of a Catholic priest, I think of the priests who molest young children. How could men that are so sick become a Catholic Priest? It just does not seem good. I can't think of a worse crime than what the priests do when they molest young children. Some of the Catholic preits are evil.

I can think of a worse crime, a Cardinal who tries to cover it up. That being said, a small percentage of any and every social/political group are evil. You aren't breaking any ground here.

Can someone please answer the following: Is the Catholic church's current stance on the hot-button "moral" issues based on the current leadership's interpretation of the Bible, or does it stem from some other source?

Actually, in this "modern era" the church needs to be the conservative anchor to stem the tide toward secularism and the persecution of the faithful. Mark my words, it's coming.

After two weeks of praising Pope John Paul II, the media is slamming Pope Benedict XVI who shares MANY of John Pauls own views. Seems a ripe target for them since they figure he's already 78 & won't be around long enough to have a great influence. Sad.

Must be that jumbly-wumbly thing happening again.

...I was hoping more a more moderate choice, particularly one with more sophistication. Christoph Schoenborn of Vienna was my favorite. A moderate to conservative, he is related to several European royal families, giving him a degree of class and connections that I believe is desirable in a modern Pope.

i think that this move was more strategical than anything. and i think his age has a lot to do with it. he will likely have less than 10 years in him as pope, after which it will be a little easier to bring in someone more "radical".

Do you think the priests who molest young children are religious? Do you think the evil priests believe that God will forgive them because of their religion? I dont think there is a worse crime. When a young child is molested it leaves emotional problems that the child may not ever recover from. Children are so young and innocent. I will never understand why a person would make them a victim of such a terrible crime.
