I have been having this problem with 3rd for about a week now and cannot understand it. First off 2000csvt. Secondly I grind when shifting into 3rd at high revs with the clutch fully pressed but when at low rpms I can put it into 3rd without a problem. Another weird point is that I can downshift from 4th to 3rd at any time without a problem and I have no problems with any other gear.
Since all the other gears have no problem at all, smooth as the day I got it, it cannot be the clutch right, because if the clutch was going then all the gears would be equally as diificult to use right. Not sure havent brought it in yet next week unless any suggestions other wise. My brothers ranger just had its clutch replaced at 140000 for the first time and when it was going out he had a problem with all the gears.
no clue guys help dan
I agree. You're an idiot because: 1) you went so fast on an open road, and 2) you came here and posted about it. And like Horse said, who cares about maxing through 5th. It's meant as an overdrive gear, not a race gear.

your third gear syncro is dying. Time for a trannie rebuild, Sorry to say buddy. good news is that if you drive nicely for a while, you can make it last long enough to save up the cash for the rebuild.

Yea, sounds like the syncro. You can try searching through the transaxle forum, but i think the only fix is to rebuild the tranny. Its a fairly common problem on the svts

tranny fluid change can be MOST helpful.. that and common sense when driving.. don't do whatever makes it grind.

I like many others, am experiencing this problem. I was getting ready to do another fluid change, but read here that Redline MTL is not good for an MTX with this problem. I would like to keep my car alive and do avoid high RPM hard shifts to 3rd gear. What is the best product to use in this situation?

not what I wanted to hear, so what are we looking at as far as cost to do this. I was hoping clutch or linkage or something stupid and easy but as far as transmissions, I am a little in the dark. Any ideas, anyone had this done before.
thanks dan

FWIW: "everyone" has had it done.
Move on to the transaxle forum and start searching up on terms like "tranny rebuid", "tranny removal" and "terry haines".
He offers tranny rebuilds for a $400.00 flat labor rate.. just parts, and shipping (and of course removal and installation at your place by someone...) he is THE man to go to. THE..

As all of you know the history of my car (FREQUENT trans flushes, gentle driving)... I TOO have the 3rd gear synchro grind.... bought it like that (shame on you Roger ) It goes in the shop to have it replaced (THANK YOU WARRANTY!!!) after spring zing. While they ar ein there, I'm going to have them update the shifter towers to the focus ones.

My 3rd is completely toast.. it started one day just a gentle lil sound. Now i dont/cant use 3rd gear at all. So listen up and save money better than i did, because you are going to need it.

My third has been toast for over two years now. I just drive the mustang now and the contour rarely. I will eventually let Terry get his hands on this POS of a tranny.
