My quick tuning tips:
1. start with the eq flat.
2. tune by ear to preferred sound, or as close as possible.
3. use an RTA to see if/where any significant spikes or holes are in the response and attempt to smooth these out.*
* if smoothing these out degrades the sound (may happen trying to fill a hole), then return to your previous settings. After all, you are listening to the system, not the RTA.
It also really helps to have the proper tools (read: CD's), just as with any other project.

Actually, now that I think about it, I just like to make cool designs with the eqs as a starting point and make them cooler by making them look like waves and i put little surfers on them. it's sweet.

For SQ, its your ears that you have to impress. For everyday use, I would start with the EQ flat and adjust from there. Play around with it, there is no real wrong answer (aside from a V or the smiley face is popular too....LOL) Bob, has more expirience in actual tuning so he can probably offer some good advice and probably can point you to some trouble spots the Contour may include
With the cars interior and the speakers position, a smiley face may still be right. With a flat RTA, if you know you want to add presence, you boost the 1500-4000 hz range, you want a more airy sound accentuate the treble. You want to make it sound like [censored], use a teenagers system as a reference.

So what is the optimum Q-factor? And I have tried many different equalizer settings, I tend to like the v-shape. I mean a medium to high bass setting, sloping down to a 0 (not negative, just equal to flat) sloping back up to a medium high treble setting.

can you hear a difference when you make changes in the Q? If no, then it doesnt matter because either: A) your deaf B) The track your using to test SQ may not be optimum C) the components in your system just can not reproduce the minor adjustments you made. D) all the above E) B and C F) A and E  If you CAN hear a difference, what sounds better to you? Thats the right answer, what ever it may be.

These aren't parameters to make a decision or give advice. Play around with it until it sounds the way you want it to.
