I don't think it would have been a good idea to evolve it into a turbo.

I think that they should have kept the selling it, use the euro mondeo as the new generation and do what the japs do, refine the 2.5 for more NA power and reliability. The platform isn't intended for all-out power ...

base 2.5 should have been been given more aggressive cams to ~185hp, SVT model should gone to the 220-230hp level with more aggressive cams, or a slight bore or something ... maybe fix that oiling issue with the heads while they were at it ...
