I don't know cable modems work differently, but my d-link router is programmed as the network gateway & uses/controls access to the DSL modem. All computers just plug in to the d-link or access via wireless.

I don't have a direct connection between the modem & any computer. Perhaps this is the source of the problem. Like I said, I've no experience with cable modems, so I don't know if they are handled differently.

Must be that jumbly-wumbly thing happening again.
