Actually, dumb question, kinda, but you don't have a firewire port or a wireless port that you're not using, do you? I have a main network card, which is fine, but I had to disable an additional network connection because of the icon in the system tray. XP particularly doesn't like unconnected network devices of any kind, even if you have one perfect connection set up.
