does anyone have a comprehensive list of Miata's, their special editions, and the most deisrable models/combinations? this is like keeping track of MGB models and options.

See the Miata.net FAQ and the links there.
BTW, there were no '98 Miatas.

I got the job offer I've been waiting for!
I still have one other company to talk to, but at least I have SOMETHING solid that I can rely on starting in July.
Woohoo! That was easy compared to convincing the wife that we should trade her reliable and comfortable sedan in for a Miata...

142 HP
'90-'93: 1.6L engine 116hp, 14X5.5 alloy wheels, viscous LSD as an option, lightest weight (2200lb give or take a few), 17 sec ET
'94-'95: 1.8L engine 128hp (OBD-I... easier to mess with than '96-'97), 14X6 alloy wheels, torsen (stronger and longer lasting than viscous) LSD as an option, larger 4-wheel disk brakes, more chassis bracing, a little more weight (2300lb give or take a few), 16.5 sec ET, similar handling and braking to '90-'93, R package was offered and had stiffer suspension and torsen, and were the lightest, M editions were the luxury models that were a bit heavier (50lb or so) and had 15X7 alloy wheels, torsen, standard suspension
'96-'97: 1.8L engine 133hp (ODB-II... a little more of a PITA than the OBD-I for mods), everything else like '94-'95 except perhaps the ride height is slightly higher (debatable)
'98: no such animal in the North America. '98 model year (NB Body style) available in other parts of the world.
'99-'00: 1.8L engine 140hp (OBD-II), 6-speed manual trans available on 10AE and SE models, 14X6 alloys or 15X7 option, torsen option, glass/defroster rear window, larger trunk, no popup lights, better aerodynamics, slightly better handling, slightly less weight than the '97 model, improved chassis rigidity, 16 sec ET
'01+: 1.8L engine 142hp (original rated 155hp (ODB-II)), 6-speed manual trans available as option, 15X6 alloy or 16X6 option, everything else same as '99-'00, improved chassis ridigity over '99-'00, heavier (2400 lb give or take a few), 16 sec ET (OK maybe 16.1 close enough) , improved brakes over '99-'00 when equipped with 16" wheels
A few notes on the '99+ models: Suspension package available as an option which included shock tower brace, stiffer springs, bilstien shocks, heavier rear swaybar, and Torsen. For '01 models suspension package also added the larger brakes that require the 16" wheels and additional bracing. The leather package automatically got all of the components of the suspension package except the bilstien shocks, stiffer springs and heavier rear swaybar, and shock tower brace (except the '01+ models). Suspension package on leather equipped cars added the rest of these items though.

Well, after three hours at the dealer today (Mazda Gallery) the deal fell through on a 2004 Titanium Grey for $20,000. They couldn't give me what I wanted for my trade on the G20t eventhough the number was right in front of them.
I gave them one last shot and laid out all the numbers, but I may end up at a different dealer or wait for the used ones to become available.
Just for the record, dealers tradtionally use NADA, not KBB, for used car pricing... right?

Sorry to hear it didn't work out. Are the incentives still good though?

all the incentives still work. $4000 customer cash, $500 student rebate for myself and my wife, so that was $5000 in incentives. sticker was just over $26000 with destination. we settled at $20000 after all the rebates but the sales manager would only give us $8000 for the G20 when i had NADA pricing that clearly shows the average trade-in at $12900. he was using KBB which showed it at $9000 and would only give me $8000 for it. after a heated discussion, we left. he claimed "the cars sell like crazy" to which i replied, "then why are 04s still on your lot?"
not sure why he would want to hold onto the inventory when he was still making some money on the car. invoice is $23700, so he was making $1300 on the sale plus his 2% dealer holdback of $540. i tried for a win-win, but he didn't see it my way.
i have another dealer with a Velocity Red 04 (i really don't want the red) who is willing to trade at NADA. we'll see how it goes. maybe i can get into an 05 with a similar deal towards the end of May.

they will use anything they can to make your car wirth less. but yes generally they use NADA because it is a private book not available for public use (the real NADA anyway - not the pansy consumer edition) - but if the KBB lists it as lower they will use KBB -
Sucks - but dont let them bedn you over! I got my MSP for a song and dance because I worked the poor salesman over for about 11 hours. Got him to give me $3200 on my 91 MR2 that had obvious crash damage ect ect - and made them sell me the MSP for way under their asking price. I went in on a saturday, the last saturdya of the month. They NEEDED to sell the car. And I purchased it, but made them eat it!
