OK. Someone help me out with this:

I've created a spreadsheet to try and get the best deal on a MS Miata. I did some reserch to find the dealer holdback allowance and the invoice prices for teh vehicle and the options. Here's the run down...

MSRP = $27,140 (w/ GT Package)
Holdback = $543
Dealer Invoice = $24,951 (w/ GT Package)
SUBTOTAL less Holdback = $24,408

MA Sales Tax @ 5% = $1,220
SUBTOTAL w/ Sales Tax = $25,628

Mazda Incentives/Rebates = $4,000 (Need to confirm this)
Student Discount = $500

GRAND TOTAL = $21,128

Now, I've heard stories of people walking out with the car for less than $20,000, sometimes close to $18,000. I've also been told that the dealer won't give up more than their holdback amount off invoice. Which is true? Do I still have room here to negotiate?

And do I pay sales tax on the subtotal before incentives and rebates or after?

Also, does anyone have a comprehensive list of the Mazda rebates and incentives?

I'd be happy driving off the lot for $20,000 even. How much room do you think I have to shave another grand off the sell price?

And here's a picture to get your juices flowing:
