A friend has one and I have driven somebody elses. They're alright I reckon. I'm not really into SUVs. Should be reliable enough.

I rented an Xterra, which I used for some highway driving and some rough off-road use.
Thoughts? looks damn good. For a tool of transportation, there are better utes. It's a not a great vehicle if you want one because it's "cool." Rough ride, before the '05 the power is measely, handling a little spooky with the live-rear axle. They are way above average as an off-road tool, can take a (reasonable) beating, and it will be realiable.
The important thing is, do you like it? If so, screw opinions. Enjoy.

There good if you plan to actually use it like the ads suggest.
If you are using it to commute and go to Wal Mart there are better options.

ive always been a huge fan of these, mostly for the way they look. I know for sure that you could get the older ones supercharged, but i dont think it was pushing the what, 245? that the '05's have.
I would love to own one

i have always thought just the opposite.....they are the most girlie looking suv to me...they just scream chick car....and all i ever see driving them are chicks, especially the yellow ones....
i just don't see how people think they look manley
but they do ride pretty good and you can't beat that nissan reliability....wouldn't be my first choice, but the new pathfinders are pretty nice i got to drive one the other day and i was impressed..

Explorers are much better. The Xterra's old motor was a joke. The new VQ holds promise, but it's still a pretty boy SUV. Of course, I can't say the new Explorers are that great either. Curse you Ford!
We have 160K miles on our 2000 Explorer and it's a workhorse. There isn't a better SUV out there for the price, period.

Yeah, with all the snow you get in Austin, I bet your Explorer comes in real handy.

I don't see how snow has anything to do with since, if anything, SUVs tend to suck in snow almost as much as anything else on the road. But they are great for off-road or off of public roads, which much of Texas is. Head anywhere E or W from Austin and anything less than a Truck or SUV is either just not going to make it or get beat to death in a hurry. Texas has extremely sharp contrasts between urban and rural, you can go 20 miles out of one of the major cities and find yourself in a town that you can't drive off Main Street without something with some ground clearance.
