Explorers are much better. The Xterra's old motor was a joke. The new VQ holds promise, but it's still a pretty boy SUV. Of course, I can't say the new Explorers are that great either. Curse you Ford!
We have 160K miles on our 2000 Explorer and it's a workhorse. There isn't a better SUV out there for the price, period.
