I posted a similar topic about this in troubleshooting, but I thought I'd post here. I found out by a mechanic that I need a new waterpump. A few questions:

1)Those it matter what kind of waterpump I get. Like how on the Duratecs you should get a metal one or a white one. Does this apply to the Zetec as well?

2)About how much would it be to get one at like Autozone or O'reilly?

3)Is it normal to lose my waterpump at 56k on my Zetec?

Thanks

Man dude you should have read my other post to you more closey.

For one you shoudnt just replace the pump, the timing belt has to come off anyways, 9 years old, yeah its time, you also need a valve cover gasket to do the job.
Parts for that are $107 for the pump, $18 for the valve gasket, and $47 for the timing belt. tensioner and pullies are a good idea right about this time to, labor was $260 or $280 I think.

If I can get a good deal, maybe I'll replace some of those other parts. What is a valve cover gasket and what does it do?

I've can't say that I've found any one pump for the Zetec better than the other. I just make sure I get a new one rather than a reman one. I do agree that if you're already in there you should change your timing belt and the pulleys. You can get the complete timing kit which includes the belt, tensioner and two idler pulleys from Rockauto.com for $120.. You DON'T need to replace the valve cover gasket. You don't even need to remove the valve cover. I'm not sure where that came from???? The toughest part of the whole job is getting that lower radiator hose removed, but other than that it's an easy two hour job IF you know what you're doing.

Call Steve at Tousley Ford: 1-800-328-9552

I don't have the prices in front of me, but for my '96 Mystique Zetec he quoted around $60 for a brand new (not rebuilt!) OEM waterpump. The timing belt was quite a bit cheaper, too, and I believe the belt tensioner or pulleys were around $40 or so a piece.

Yeah I got the water pump at O'reilly. Got it for $38 at a discounted price from my mechanic. It's geting installed tommorow. He said the timing belt is ok now, so I'll worry about that later on.

Removing the valve cover gasket was mentioned if respect to changing the timing belt I believe.

You could have done the job yourself. I did a few months ago and it's about as difficult as doing your own brakes. If I did it again, it would prob take just over an hour with all the right tools. Oh well. I was going to make another How-To. Guess you've motivated me to now
