Hills in Texas Crossing to Nevada you drive over a 7000 ft pass, the Mountains are vastly taller than that and I forgot to mention the Olympic caliber skiing that is on the mountains.

Guadalupe Peak, Texas, 8,749 feet
Guadalupe is a favorite peak among highpointers largely because for the entire route you have unobstructed views for almost 100 miles and because the peak is truly unique in that it is one huge fossilized prehistoric ocean reef!
Two countries (US and Mexico) and two states (Texas and New Mexico) are visible from MOST of the trip upwards..

I know.. you have higher.. but my illustration remains the same..

And why I don't like Texas, it't hot & humid in the Summer, completely miserable. Your winters are pretty bad too, not a fan of Thunderstorms in the N. Texas area or the Hurricanes in the Coastal areas, I think it snowed in Dallas this year too. So miserable Summers and Winters? Why I hated the midwest when I lived there.

Texans have a laundry list of reasons why Texas is better than California . . . default state defensiveness . . .the partial list includes:

-Blue Bonnett Ice Cream
-Beautiful Women
(ya ya.. you've got 'em too.. I know!
-Longhorns
-Aggies
-Red Raiders
-America's Team
-country music
This, of course, was a humorous list, and not one that I stand by. LOL LOL

Average winter high is 60, Average Summer high is around 78.
We rarely drop below 32, maybe at 6am a few times a year. and rarely hit 90 or above in the summers.

Average Austin temp in the middle of July is:
95 HIGH
74 LOW
85 average
Miserable? SUN-N-FUN baby... outlook is everything!

Lets talk crime rate. Dallas, Houston and San Antonio are all in the top 4 for worst crime in large cities. San Jose at over 900,000 population is the safest big city in the nation.....

That is a city of 900,000

Dallas - 3,519,176 in 2000
Houston - 4,177,646 in 2000
San Antonio - 1,592,383 in 2000
Dallas is 4.64 TIMES larger..
so..
Using that, with this data:

Crimes PER 100,000 people..the categories that Dallas lead in were:
Property Crimes:
7950.2(TX) to 2012.1(CA) that's 3.95 times more.. for a city 4.64 times larger..
Forcible Rape:
56.5(TX) to 37.9(CA) (AGAIN.. 1.4 times more for a city 4.6 times larger...

There were more murders in Dallas, and more Auto Theft, so I am not saying we are better in ALL ways.. just pointing out flaws in your logic..

I've been to Alabama, Iowa, Michigan, Illinois, Massachusetts, Georgia, Arkansas, Missouri, Oklahoma, & Colorado . Only place I liked as much and felt as homey to me was Boston and Chicago in the Fall/Spring.

Chicago???? Nice place.. but not what I would call.. "homey" (at least not to me.. ) though I am not knocking what you like.. Navy Pier r0x0rs, though..

I liked Dallas, I really did, but damn that weather in the Summer, you all were friendly though and that cost of living is super nice.

Friendly is what we do... door holding, waving at cars that pass, and tipping our hats (those that wear them, not I) to others is something we take to heart..

Besides that, in San Antonio, WE KNOW what salsa should taste like...
You do have surf, and skiing could be fun, if I could survive it! ( )

I think if the price was right, everyone of you would move to Cali. Aside from the asinine cost of housing, this place is more than alright.

The price could never be "right" for me.. as I said.. I was there for a year at one time, and multiple 4 month stays.. ALL BILLS PAYED (housing, food, gas, mileage, etc) and I still was ready to leave after each stay.. To each his own, but to say that your place is better simply because you live there, isn't a great mindset..

Chicago is an accident waiting to happen. I couldn't wait to leave Illinois. Big Bend National Park and the small town of Alpine, Texas is where I found peace.

The size of a city isn't necesarialy a good measurement. Look at NYC for example, largest city in the nation, and the crime rate isn't nearly as bad as many people are led to believe.

There is simply too many other things for me to reply to in this thread. With that said I think it is ironic that a lot of the guys who live in BFE crap all over cali.

the size may not be, in general.. my point exactly..

he was comparing a city of 900,000 to cities of anywhere from 1.5 to 4.1 MILLION..

crime:population ratio, Dallas wasn't any worse for the wear, and actually fared better in some categories..

I don't know if that includes me. The albany metro area is about 150k people, so not exactly BFE, but nothing special. I definitely don't claim Albany as the best place, probably any city in Cali is better than it, but that's just albany.

I think California is an ok PLACE. But a lotta the people aren't so OK and a few other things. ... I don't like big cities. I like some of what they offer and they can be fun to visit. But I like the country. I also don't like earthquakes.
