Texas and Florida in places offer close to the same variety for a quarter of the price(the quality of which can be debated; it all depends if you're stuck on having mountains around you).
For someone that makes a fair living, it leaves room for serious investing, vacation property, sizeable primary residences and by most measures, a FAR better chance at a quality retirement.
I can see the physical attraction to CA, but not for the price one has to pay. Chalk me up as a person that just doesn't "get it".
