Let me tell you what it's like to live in the murky crap we had here in the 1970's:
1) stinging, watering eyes most of the summer
2)restrictions on going outdoors and exercising during school recess
3) burning sensation in the lungs if you ran around outside on a smoggy day
4) overall queasy feeling on days with high ozone
5) high rates of asthma in children and old people.
6) old people dying at mysteriously high rates on bad smog days
I could go on. Those people you mentioned would be well advised to spend a few cents per gallon for a cleaner blend of gas. That probably goes for Atlanta too.
Sounds like Mexico City on good days...
...10-15 years ago. They've cleaned up their air quite a bit, but it still has a LONG ways to go.
I've said it once and I'll say it again. I love to visit CA, but you would have to pay me a king's ransom to live there. It's got everything one could want, but the cost of living is entirely out of whack with reality.
I've turned down two jobs in CA; one in Folsom (where it's supposed to be halfway affordable) and another with a company in the Bay Area. Traffic, laws, HOUSING PRICES, cost of living, taxes, etc., etc.
Projections are that the housing market in CA has finally hit a plateau for the most part; I have a feeling that the days of insane housing and property appreciation are over. Those that have owned property for a long period of time are set if they can sell out (and if they've been able to keep up with property taxes; I know a few folks that have sold and moved out of places due to property taxes eating them alive); those moving in better be banking serious money unless they want to pay rent their entire lives...
I've run the numbers and they just don't work unless one sees a tremendous uplift in their paycheck.
