I have to disagree with this reasoning.. My college degree opened all kinds of doors for me (and still does) - Many employers looked at it in lieu of work experience, which at the time was something I lacked.. I didn't go to an amazing Ivy League school, but a well-known state school (that was very affordable). The job I ended up taking when I graduated, the president was an Alumni of my college, and that sort of sealed the deal.
