If you're getting new, you may want to think about the FZ6 -- has a full fairing kit too if you're going for the poseur value heh.

I just bought an FZ6 this past January and love every minute of it. I have about 3200 miles on it already; I ride every chance I get. The FZ6 dominates the SV650 in every review I have read. I think the only one thing that was ever said better is that the SV has better low end torque. But who needs torque with 10 more HP (dyno'ed) and a 14,000rpm redline??

I have a 1975 Honda CB500. Custom front forks, custon seat, custom exhaust, custom paint job (black with speckles or something like that). But I'm selling it to get some money to keep me alive during the summer while I wait till September to find a job (I am finishing university in a month). Can't wait to have the summer off (more like 4 months )

That's just it. I'm a n00b. I can't handle that much power on my jock. I've read up and the SV650S seems to be the best bike with balls for a beginner (lol alliteration). The rest aren't going to be forgiving enough... or so I'm told.
And I'm not thinking "new." I'm thinking "$2,000 or less."

When I rode off the lot with my FZ6, that was the second time I had ridden a motorcycle. The bike is VERY forgiving; if you keep it below 8k rpm, you stay well under the power curve and have a much less chance of getting into trouble.
The SV650 has more torque, which means it's easier to get the front wheel off the ground at lower RPMs. For the first 3 weeks or so, I never took my bike past 5k and had no problems with it getting the best of me. Now that I have a little more experiance, when I want to feel the power I can rev it to redline and still be happy.
On top of all that the FZ handles and brakes better than the SV and the Honda 599 (you can keep yourself out of trouble easier)
I also think you might outgrow the SV faster than you might think.
If you really have to keep it under 2000, you might have to get a SV; they have been around longer than the FZ, which might be able to get you a bike under that limit. Although, a quick search of cycletrader shows the cheapest SV to be 2200 and it has been layed over. I found a couple at the 2500 range, and even a Yamaha FZR600 for 2500...
Another option is to finance through Yamaha. Is your credit any good? If you get the Yamaha financing it is like a credit card. You can buy anything from a dealer that is also a Yamaha dealer (ie. buying a Honda with the Yamaha card is just fine to do.) If you get their card, you can get 4.9% for 2 years, which is a min. monthly payment of $39 (though if you only pay the min, after 2 years you screwed yourself and pretty much owe the full cost of the bike...)
If you want any help, as I have just gone through all this (and actually got my bike transfered from a Dallas dealership too) just PM me or post here again.

If I had a bike I am sure I would be dead by now....and people still looking for the body. "Well, we found the bike but the only other thing that we found was this little pile of goo." But if there was one bike I would bet it would be the Tommahawk.....and since that is NEVER going to happen, I doubt I will ever see it in person.....I would want a Harley V-Rod.
