And if you're not exactly sure what he did and did not know about the status and true availability of the car, then just split the costs evenly.
THERE.. DONE DEAL. And... one thing to think about... is the car worth 120 bucks to you?? If thats all that seperates this from your nightmare ending, pay the guy, and have your wife work the 120.00 off. ..... yeah, seh'll pay alright.
especially if you piss that guy off and then he goes and does donuts and burn-outs in your car. then things will just get worse. i agree that he should pay for the inspection though. if the car didnt pass and he didnt want the car, he would want his deposit back but not be entitled to the inspection fee. that is an option that is up to the buyer. BUT, in the interest of getting your car back unscathed and just making this nightmare go away, id just reimburse him. plus, id feel bad that my wife led him to believe that he was buying the car. if i was him, i sure as hell wouldnt be very happy.

Yes but at the point she said it's my husbands car and descision, he knew she had no legal right! I think sliptting it with him would be the best way.

The problem with America is stupidity.
I'm not saying there should be a capital punishment
for stupidity, but why don't we just take the safety
labels off of everything and let the problem solve itself?

I'd make good ole wifey pay the $120, IF the guy can produce a legit recipt for the inspection, otherwise no dice.

Let me rephrase. My bad.
Who the hell pays to have a car inspected before you buy one? From where I'm from, that's doen for free.
I still stand solid that the guy should not have paid for the inspection and I apologize for the misleading description.
I was in a hurry.

Which is why what she said matters, and why I said "Knowing what he knew..."
I'm sure he knew that she had no right to sell the car, but if she said something like "He's been talking about selling it for a while..." and "Don't worry, it won't be a problem..." that makes a big difference.

I'd agree with that. It's rare to pay for a quick once-over Pre-Buy inspection. Particularly since it was taken to "their mechanic", so they must've known the guy.
That's another clue this could all be a joke... I don't know how many people pay, let alone pay a whopping $120, for a quick inspection from the family mechanic.

From what I understand... he did not sell the car for $1000. The guy paid a deposit for it.
