There's no "M package" - it's a model unto itself (in this case the M5). Based on the standard 5-series, there's specific suspension, interior and of course motor changes in the M model. That being said, I don't know if I'd go for am M5. Yes, probably my all-time favorite BMW in that it's comfortable, good looking, handles well and is bitchin' fast, but unless you plan on taking it to the track when would you take advantage of the added performance over say a 540i with sport package and be able to justify the major price difference and likely insurance hit as well? I love my 328i, it's got all the performance I need for the street. Sure, I'd love to have the additional 90+ hp that an M3 would give me but likely not at the expense of the harsh suspension and killer insurance rates.
Drive and then decide.

my brother in law just bought an 02 525. it has about 70k freeway miles but it is immaculate ! its such a nice car too bad its not a 540. if the bimmer is what you reallly want than i say just do it! i wanted a csvt for years but had the same concerns you are having about the bimmer. i decided it was worth it and i would just deal with the problems when they arise. i searched hard to find a mint condition sample and now i have and love it. there is nothing like buying a car for a hefty sum of money and then regretting it (ie wishing you had bought the other car ) been there, done that.
Not that I am saying what you said isn't true, but I don't think I have EVER seen a G35. Tons and tons and tons of b's....but no G35. Of the the lawyers I wored for owns a 750 though.

You'd have to really live in the backwoods to have never seen a G35. They're everywhere. Infiniti sells almost 75,000 G35s a year, making it more common than the Mazda6.
It is, of course, not literally "more common than bimmers now", but the roads are certainly not lacking G35s on them, for sure.

What I am looking at is the 540i with sport package and it has the M5 front skirt which I thought they referred to as an M package, not the M5 . Been reading lots of info on the forums today and one forum was ranting and raving about the car and the other was saying it's not to reliable. This is making me more confused.

No M Package, huh Scott? Hmmmm, interesting....
Well, you better check that buddy, because the 5 series were in fact offered with M upgrades such as the M-Parallel wheels, a complete M Body kit (F&R bumbers, sideskirts) M steering wheel, M Cluster, M Seats...
So YES, there is an M Package for the 5 series.

Drove one today and all I can say is wow what a car! Fast yet very nimble considering it's size. So much faster then I anticipated. I'm going to try a 530i as I think the 540i's power might get me into trouble if I decide to finally buy a bimmer. Anyone have a driving experiences to share? What a car and talk about smooth shifting!!!

OK, I admit when I'm wrong, and I was wrong here. Tjere was an M sport package offered, essentially the M5 without the motor as far as I can tell.
To tell the truth, that'll probably be my next ride if I can find one with low miles for less than a mint.
