I did a search on this but my two ?'s didnt seem to be answered quite well enough. Here they are:

1) One day I watched my speedo fall from 65mph to 0mph...I threw a CEL and got the code read and it said "speed sensor". Is there a seperate SVT speed sensor or is there only 1 contour speed sensor that is made for both SVT's and non-SVT's?

2) I have heard all kinds of places where the speed sensor is...from behind the dash, to behind the gauges, to on the tranny. Can someone tell me the EXACT detailed location of this and the easiest way of removal. Pics would be great.
P.S. is this a Pep Boys part or Stealership part? Any ideas on price?

Thanks in advance

Both me and my friends speed sensor crapped out on our SVTs also.

The part you are looking for is the VSS that plugs directly into the side of the tranny. All V6 manuals, SVT or non, use the same sensor. Unless it's a early 95 which has no VSS. But that's another story.

I ordered mine from fordpartsonline.com. Here is the link to all the sensors. VSS Replacements

Mine came to $37.64 + shipping.

I don't have any pics for installing it but the easiest way is reaching down from the top, just to the right of the engine, and towards the back. The car doesn't have to be on a lift or anything to do it.

If you look closely down there you can see the sensor and wires coming out of it on the tranny.

Now, mine was very easy to do because my wires got damaged so that's why it didn't work. Usually when a VSS goes out, it is because the original stupid cheap plastic design snapped off in the opening for the VSS.

The replacement is not the same sh*tty design. It's metal.

If part of the VSS broke off and doesn't come out when you remove it, then you have to find a way to get it out before installing the new one. Don't push it into the tranny, cause then you'll have some trouble.

Good luck.

does it point towards the front of the car and does it have a light grey harness that is connected to a white piece or plastic and then a nut after the white plastic. I think this is it but not sure. Everything about it looks ok. I dont see any wires coming off of it though..just the harness the white plastic, nut etc. Its hidden so damn well no wonder I couldnt find it (if this is it).

How do you take it out? Loosen the nut then pull it out or another way?

Thanks

EDIT: i rolled up the woven material wire wraping and there is wires...a looks like red and green wire and a white wire. There is no cable running to the grey plastic harness just those two wires. man there are so many things that look like what Im lookin for I don;t know if im on track or not.

If I try to explain where it is anymore than I have, I'm just gonna confuse you and have you taking stuff out that you shouldn't be. LOL I'm terrible with this stuff.

The sensor itself screws into the tranny. No nuts holding it on. Its threaded. So you just turn the sensor until it's out.

Hope that helps a little.

I apreciate the help so far but there is like 2 or 3 things that i "think" might be it and im not sure. Can anyone else give a little better detailed description i.e. color harness, color wires, in relationship to, pics, etc. There is even a spot that I think it might have been screwed into and it fell out. As you can see I'm searching blindly. Once I find it Im prob. gonna laugh at myself but right now I don't reaally even have a clue at that type, shape, etc it is or how to remove it.

80 views and only 1 person has replied? This repair isn't asking someone to split atoms, I would think there would be more than 1 person on this board w/ enough car knowledge to help me out w/ this. Can someone give some assistence as to a better descriptin of what this thing looks like, color or harness/wires, this part in relationship to, how to take it off to replace, etc. There are a few things that i think it could be so more clarification would be apreciated.
