A fellow rotorite is actually in the calendar... June.
See the list of "warnings" for a Jack Russell Terrier... or Parson Russell Terrier if you want to be AKC technical.
1) Only dog. 2) No other pets. 3) No small children.
and the list goes on and on... yet one of my best friends has a totally lovable JRT named Nippy who is extremely loving and lovable.
I suggest everybody who has reservations about pit bulls to visit this site and see more about these dogs than the media hype.
No kids or other dogs for a JRT?!?!? The only reason I see for that is because they love attention. They'll just be sad if they don't get the attention they want. They're not aggressive.
And Derk, I researched a bit just to refresh what I've seen/heard before. I found sources saying the "bad gene" thing about pit bulls but I found sources that said otherwise. Thing is, the sources I found saying otherwise had a lot more documented and trustworthy sources than the "bad gene" sources.

Part of it is that they are very territorial and will attack small animals. They also tend be very hyperactive, and therefore unintentionally harm very small children.

I don't care for these dogs. Here in Dayton they are owned/fought by dope dealers. We get numerous calls a day that one of these lovable pooches is running through the neighborhood biting kids, killing smaller dogs. We have a law here that the owner has to keep the pit in a 6' tall kennel with a roof and carry 1 million dollars worth of insurance on them. Of course the pieces of sh*t that own these dogs don't abide by these laws and they get out and terrorize the neighborhoods.I have seen the end result from the 3 year old that tugged ol Fido's ear and it snapped and he gets 300+ stitches and a scarred face. I had a friend that had a pit. I was around it quite a bit,it almost changed my mine on the breed. He had him from a pup and never mistreated it. He had to take it to his mom's after he moved, and it got of the leash and killed a dog someone was walking. To each his own,but watch your kids! Rod

Terrier's are not feared since they are small. Most people get nervous when a barking 50+ pound dog is heading there way. 20 pound and under are "awwwhhh look how cute..." you see a rot, pit, pincher etc heading your way, "....sh!t...."
I agree its their raising, I have never been around a dog that became aggressive instantly, not saying it does not or could not happen. Just my experience. My dog is part pit, she was abandoned, possibly beaten as well by her last owner. I got her from the local shelter. She becomes a nervous wreck if I raise my voice to her. I can not believe people can be so cruel to such good pets.

Congrats dude, raise it well.
My uncle in Toledo, Ohio has 2 Boston Terriors (actually brothers too) they are 2 years old, (Elliott and Truman) cool dogs very hyper too, but when they aren't jumping around all hyper, they are pretty loveable dogs.
good luck with the pitbull.
I can't wait til I get my own place I might get me a dog, maybe a Great Pyranese(sp?) I grew up with one of those dogs, she was one of my best friends, I just lost it when we had to put he to sleep.
 R.I.P. She-rah.

I can't say that there's actually a "gene" making pitbulls aggressive. But, historicly people bred aggressive dogs for their aggressive characteristics. That's really what I'm getting at. (And that's the worst part, too, cause like I said, I think the vast majority of dogs are happy and loving animals)
I remember reading about Georgia proposing a blanket ban, but I don't know if it passed.
And of course, I'll reiterate that what the public hears or sees on the news is always the bad stuff. You'll never hear a nation-wide news story about a pitbull pulling a drowning kid out of a pool...the media wont let us hear it.

Yeah, pitbulls were (and still are to some extent) definitely bred as fighting dogs.

Yeah, so I incorrectly used "gene" but I should have said "trait."

Yeah, their trait is strong jaws and lean/muscular bodies.
Any dog will fight. Their "trait" is not their aggressiveness, rather it's their body type.
In a study I found, pitbulls passed an aggressiveness test by 95%, other dogs averaged 77%.
