Trying to figure out if I can do a swap myself. Might pick up an extra trans, build it up(inside and out) and then swap it.

Thanks!

Probably uses it to raise/lower/hold the engine up. You only have the one top passenger side mount connected when all is said and done (you have to remove the driver side as it bolts to the tranny).

I just used a jack and 2x4 under the oil pan to hold mine - the manual recommends "three bar engine support or equivalent" and I guess a cherry picker is equivalent I felt okay with my method as the manual recommends "Place a floor jack and a block of wood under the transaxle and raise the transaxle enough to release the tension on the three bar engine support, or equivalent. " so if that was okay I figured holding up the engine minus transaxle with a 2x4 under the oil pan would be fine.

-EDIT-

"Slowly lower the transaxle until it reaches the limits of the front engine mount movement. "

This sounds straghtforward enough, but when you start lowering the engine with the one mount still connected it's pretty freaky to watch the rubber stretching like it did, but it holds up fine.

ive done it both ways, dropping the tranny and subframe is teh easier method definetaly. i dont have a lift but i got a cherry picker. and as for getting the tranny back onto the engine. put the tranny on my chest, rolled under on a creeper and lifted it into place went in almost instantly

The motor mounts are bolted to the engine and the subframe. No subframe, no mounts to hold the engine.

Besides a cherry picker, there are "bridges" that erect above the engine bay to support the engine from above.

bringing this back from the dead, but has anyone actually just lowered the driverside subframe and slide the trans over to reach the clutch? i was just thinking about that since with the saturns you can drop one side of the subframe and pull the trans out very simple.

thought id through it out if no one has done it, because i think i will.

Yup I just used this method, I think it was the first time I ever said "that was pretty easy" when working on this car. Would have had the trans out in under 4 hours if it wasn't for the shift rod end being seized onto the tranny.
