So, I'll get to the point as soon as I can...

I went to the NC school of science and mathematics, so my high school transcript is a plus.

I ended up going to Illinois Institute of Technology for college going for aerospace and mechanical engineering. A year and a half through I decide to take time off because of family problems/stress from it and because I don't feel right there. GPA due to above stress and me being stupid = 2.5 =( =( =(

So I have decided instead of going back and paying crazy amounts of money because I lost most of my 3.25 and 3.0 scholarships, that I would "start over".

Now my question is, I know I can't lie to NC state (best in-state school here besides Duke for engineering and hopefully where I'll go next) that I went to another college, and I know they'll want a transcript from them (ouch ouch ouch), so would it be better to start from scratch not trying to be a transfer student and choosing a different major, or risk their 3.0 recommended and 2.0+ considered gpa specs for engineering transfer students?

I screwed myself, at least I learned the best lesson of my life. I really want to go back to college.

Ask for an admissions interview (I assume they still do these at state schools... they do at most privates) and explain this very situation to them and tell them just how much, exactly, you want to go to this school and why, etc. It will score you major points and can overrule some grade probs at another school. So long as HS transcript is good, SATs/ACTs are strong, and your 2.5 is at least uniform (vs. a few A's in BS classes and Ds/Fs in anything with some meat).

You can't really chose "transfer" or "start-over"... it's more of "HS student or not." You WILL have to give them transcripts from all other schools attended, then they will admit you based on the strength of your file. Then you can decide if you want to transfer your credits and they will determine just how much credit you get for those classes.

Good luck, and kudos on your decision to return!

Good luck. I don't have too much advice except stick at it and talk to the college. I've always found the most useful answers by going straight to the source. And a 2.5 gpa isn't too bad, I'm pulling up my 1.2 from last semester (i be sorta smart, jus preferred partying over class and realized it too late).
