The regular cams will fall flat at around 6k rpm rather than continuing to make power up to/through red line.
Actually I'm not assuming anything. The part about standard cams not taking advantage of the heads is not an accurate statement.
It is especially critical to have good flow in order to make the most of cams that aren't optimized for high rpm flow. Since the valve timing is less than optimal for flow above 5500 rpm then you want to have as little resistance to flow as possible so you can get more air in. If what you are implying is true then there would never have been anyone with small block V8's porting and polishing heads to get extra flow....and we all know that's a critical improvement for those motors.
The cams for the SVT are THE number one improvement. The extrude hone is tied with agressive pcm tuning as the number two most important improvement.
The demand for SVT heads is low because you can port stock heads or send your own in for extrude hone after you port them. Those that want high performance tend to go even bigger with 3L engines, however, those are still expensive options.
