Wow, something the girls can use to race to Marshal-Fields, to be first in line at the Clinique counter.

I'm being cynical, yes, but I GUARANTEE it'll flop. The Saturn badge it THE wrong badge for them to bring this car out under.
Saturn envokes the image of plastic, cheap, commuter cars. The ION Redline is kind of poking at that seal, but still is an weird looking little car.
Todd, if you bought one of those I'd buy you a pink tutu and a LV bag to go with it.

GM is poising Saturn to move into the $25-40K market. It will be more of a sporty version of Buick than a kissing cousin to Pontiac in the lineup. It will be getting a lot of Opel designs in the near future. This is just their first step at making the move. It'll take time, but I think Saturn is still new enough in the grand scheme of things that it can move up pretty easily as long as their products are good.
But I wouldn't get too excited about the Sky just yet -- particularly in regards to it being a "Miata Killer". People don't buy the Miata because it has XX horsepower or not -- which is why MazdaSpeed Miatas sell for several thousand less than even regular ones. People buy Miatas for the driving experience, something that GM utterly sucks at, and certainly something that's impossible to determine from pictures. We won't know if it's a "Miata Killer" until people are actually driving the things.

Did a serious test drive in a ION - RedLine this past weekend on a coned autocross type course. I was impressed! Interior was nice, Recaro seats were impressive. Car revved freely! Big 17" wheels with sticky Z rated tires. Plenty of back seat, trunk room.
And the car was quick! I've read reports of 0-60 in the mid 6's and Qtr mile time of 14.6 - 14.8 stock! Shifts were nice and smooth as well.
I drove an '04 and for '05 you can get a LSD in it which will make it handle even better. Add in the Saturn rebates/incentives of $5K and this car is a winner at $17K.
And if you don't like the SKY get a Solstice

GM (as evident from the recent 80% fall in profits) does not know what the hell they are doing.
And yes, Saturn is the wrong badge for this to come out of.
A stripped down version should be under the Pontiac badge, and the more luxurious version should be under the Cadillac badge.
It's laughable why Saturn exists, just a testament to what people really think of GM.

Was this not the niche filled by Olds?
