Kind of new at home car maintenance but since getting my Contour I want to treat her right.
I drive a 2000 Contour SE/Sport with 45,000 on it or so and was wondering what kind of oil you all would reccomend putting in to it. I drive the car pretty hard also. I really don't know oil types at all so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Go synthetic. I use Mobil 1. It may or may not really be better, but I think there is probably some benifit to it. I think 5k intervals will be fine, I've been doing 3k, but I think that I'm going to change to 5k from the evidence I've seen. And use a good filter. I use K&N, it's a costly one, but I really think it is at least a little better than most others, so I shell out a few bucks more each oil change quite willingly.

Mobil 1 5w30, Motorcraft filter.
K&N HP 2010 filter flows better, costs $10.00.

Royal Purple synthetic.

Quick Question: What is the latest you can switch to synthetic (mileage wise) without it causing any leaks or anything like that?

Most people say 60k. I think you could switch much later. I don't know if there is any foundation behind the leaking engine stories. Google it, and see what you find. In the end, it's up to you, if you feel comfortable with it. I switched at 60k exactly, no problems at all.

I'm kinda scared to change to synthetic oil. There is nothing I hate more than a leaking engine, so I'll probably just keep using conventional. After all, it has done plenty good for the previous 74K.

yeah, nothing wrong with it. I say read the reviews and pick a good (expensive) dino oil, and stick with it.

There were issues with Syn ausing leaks when it was first developed, but that was back in the day like long before the contour was even being designed.
Its totally safe to do it at any millage and should not induce any leaking that wasnt already there to begine with, which should be addressed anyway.
I changed my SVT over from dino to Amsoil full syn 5W30 in my SVT when I bought it with 185K, no leaks yet!

So in review I want to use Mobil 1 5W-30 Synthetic Oil.
On the oil filter, where can I buy this K&N HP 2010 filter. Yes I'm aware it's a bit more pricey but it's a minimal extra charge, and that's besides the point. I'm willing to spend money on my Contour.
