I'm not sure if I would call it selfish act. It's like as if a person borrowed money from many people and instead of spending it all decided to give the money to charity and not payback to the people whom lent him the money in the first place.

Some of the people might be OK with that arrangement, others may be angered.

But the crux of the situation is that he was not in a position to do what he chooses to with the money, and in this case, his life. He needed to have paid back to all who he owes. Taking his life doesn't erase what he owes.
