http://www.cnn.com/2005/LAW/03/18/schiavo.brain-damaged/index.htmlThoughts on this? IMO, I don't think there is a person in this world that would want to live if they were in a 'vegetative' state, Mrs. Schiavo included. For those that don't know, the husband wants to pull the plug, parents want to keep her artificially alive. The husband should have the final say in this case I think. -J

I concur. There is NO quality of life in this particular instance. The husband should have the final say. Sad case indeed.

this was on the news earlier but the tv was on mute. they showed video footage of her as "brain damaged" but smiling and moving her arms and what not. is she now completely brain dead? i would think so if theyre talking about pulling the plug. if she is brain dead then there is no possibility of her "getting better" as her parents are hoping for. what a sad situation.

i have already told the person who would speak for me that if i am ever in that situation turn me off. the same decision has been reached by mom and dad, both of whom have given me the same directions.

She supposedly, according to the parents and their supportice doctors, has the permanent mental state of a 6mo old baby. So she sometimes responds to some stimulus in the same way a young child would, she'll smile or move her arms around. Whether it's actually in response to stimuli or simply the brain doing random things is arguable. But she's not "brain dead".
Frankly, either way it goes, I don't see how anyone can argue that anyone would want to live in such a condition. Nor can I see how a parent would want to see their own child reduced to that.

You better make sure you have that in writing too and notarized just to make sure. Just telling the person who will speak for you is exactly the same situation that this woman and her husband are in now.

My Dad was put in that situation. Months before he passed he said he never wanted to live like that.
He had a stroke, survived brain surgery, but died first day of rehab. I know he would not have wanted to live that life, and rehab would have done nothing to improve his quality of life; the woman's parents should know that.
From what I read I feel the parents are not accepting reality after so many years.

The real moral of the story is that everybody should have a living will completed. You never know when you might need it, though I truly hope none of you ever do.

yeah, i've thought about that. my mom has it in writing and has me listed as the one person authorized to make her medical decisions when she is incapable. dad and i sign some papers a couple years back that give me sole and complete power to make medical decisions when he cannot, i forget what that is called though. this way my brother and his wife can't mess things up with emotion and sentimentality. i have nothing written down so i am sol should tragedy strike.

Those are a health care power of attorney. They are good for making a lot of grey area decisions, but a living will is still good to have, as that relieves much of the burden from you, as then they have already made critical decisions about what care they would want to receive.
